The origins of Elliotts of Lymington date back to April 15th 1873, when 29-year-old George Elliott, a draper from Ringwood, married Miss Elizabeth Decent, four year his senior. The following honeymoon lasted but four days, for on April 19th 1873, George and Elizabeth opened the Lymington Clothing Mart at 87 High Street, Lymington.
Well-heeled customers could purchase four suits for the season for £15 at a time when Norfolk jackets with big flowing knickers were considered the ultimate fashion. Indeed such was the initial success of their busy family trade that in 1890 it became necessary for George and Elizabeth to vacate No. 87 (later to become the Gas Showrooms and now Country and Casuals) and move across the High Street to much more spacious premises at Nos. 44-46. Here, George sold hunting wear and Derby tweeds, both made to measure on the premises and off the peg. The family now lived in their new abode above the shop. |
